Models of Interpersonal Effectiveness

Humanistic

Some call this the soft approach. Given the axioms of communication, you might call it relational. There are five qualities to this approach:

Openness

Willingness to self-disclose
Reacts honestly and directly
Owns standpoint

Empathy

Avoid evaluating
Soak them up
Identify emotions

Supportiveness

Descriptive v. evaluative
Provisional - Open minded

Positiveness

Attitudinal
Genuine v. patronizing

Equality

Should & ought

Pragmatic

Some might call this the hard approach. Five qualities include:

Confidence

Take initiative
Control emotions
Avoid paralinguistic faux pas

Immediacy

Proximity
Feedback

Interaction Management

Agreement with verbal and non-verbal expression
Savvy with turn cues and facilitates
Self-Monitoring

Expressiveness

Active listening

Other-Orientation

Consideration
Confirmative
Agreement
Allows expression
