Great question. There are certain expectations we hold ourselves to, like the idea of reaching our goals and realizing our direction. These are intrinsic expectations, something we don't put on to others. And "own" certainly can be interpreted as staying true to, but that's done through one's own critical search.
Looking back on some notes on amelioration...wouldn't expectations help us "own our direction" as you mentioned?
